Psychopathy and Moral Decision-Making Deficits
 ,
 ,
Abstract

Psychopathy is characterized by emotional detachment, reduced empathy, impulsivity, and antisocial behavior. Research suggests that deficits in moral decision-making among psychopathic individuals are not merely behavioral, but arise from neural dysfunction in affective-cognitive integration systems, particularly in the amygdala, ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). This paper explores how cognitive, neurological, affective, and social factors interact to produce atypical moral reasoning in psychopathy. Using a review of neuroimaging studies, moral dilemma experiments, and cognitive assessment models, the study concludes that psychopathy involves intact abstract moral reasoning but impaired emotional processing, leading to utilitarian or self-serving moral judgments. A neuro-moral model is proposed to explain the mechanism behind these deficits.
